Washington ends the Steelers undefeated

PITTSBURGH.

The team of Washington Football surprisingly won 23-17 over the Steelers, thus ending with an unbeaten 11 games who held the Pittsburgh franchise before this week 13 of the NFL.

Alex Smith threw for 296 yards and a touchdown, Dustin Hopkins broke the tie with a 45-yard field goal with 2:04 left.

Pittsburgh (11-1) missed an opportunity to secure a playoff berth and fell to a tie with defending Super Bowl champs, Kansas City Chiefs, at the top of the American Conference four games from the end of the regular season. A day after the New York Giants upset in Seattle, Washington (5-7) kept up the pace as they rallied from a 14-point deficit to win at Pittsburgh for the first time since 1991.

Washington won the Super Bowl that season. The team’s expectations this year are much more modest in the first season with Ron Rivera as his coach.

Not so in Pittsburgh, which posted their best start to the season in the franchise’s 87-year history despite the occasional ups and downs of the offense. In a game that was postponed one day because a Covid-19 outbreak in Baltimore’s ranks forced the NFL to reschedule the Ravens’ annual visit to Heinz Field three times, the little mistakes that Pittsburgh was able to fix over 11 games were too to counteract.

Ben Roethlisberger threw for 305 yards and two touchdowns, but was intercepted by Jon Bostic, former Steelers player, with 1:59 minutes remaining. Hopkins added another 45-yard field goal to help seal the victory.
