US Women’s Golf Open: Henderson bogs down

Things are going from bad to worse for Brooke M. Henderson at the US Women’s Golf Open. After two complicated first days, the Ontarian followed with a third round of 77 (+6) on Saturday in Houston, Texas. She is now 13 shots behind the leader, the Japanese Hinako Shibuno.

Back on the Cypress Creek course, where she had a 73 (+2) card on Friday, Henderson had few moments of celebration in this third round. Particularly in the second half of the course, when she committed three bogueys and a double bugy in six holes.

The first nine went a little better for the 23-year-old Canadian, who had only committed a buggy at 12e pennant.

With a round to go, Henderson has a cumulative 222 (+9) and is very far behind the leader, at 61e rang.

After stealing the top from American Amy Olson on Friday, Shibuno managed to hold onto the lead despite a third round of 74 (+3). The Japanese had more difficulty this time on Cypress Creek, as she recorded four bogueys and a single birdie. On her first run on the course, in the initial round, she had a score of 68 (-3).

Shibuno’s lead at the top, however, melted in one fell swoop at the end of the day, with she holding three strokes ahead of her closest rival when attacking the Greens on Saturday. She now has a record of 209 (-4).

Olson rapplique

For her part, Olson climbed back to second with a par of 71. The American, who had a hole-in-one in the opening round, recorded three birdies and as many bogeys to bring her cumulative to 210 (- 3).

South Korean Ji Yeong 2 Kim and Thailand’s Moriya Jutanugarn are also in the race for the title, as they are tied for third, three strokes behind the leader. Kim is also one of only two golfers to have completed the third round under par with a card of 67 (-1).

Her compatriot Hae Ran Ryu, meanwhile, ended her day with a score of 70 (-1), which allowed her to climb from 36e to 9e echelon. With a record of 214 (+1), she is five strokes behind Shibuno.
