He won eight of the 12 titles as a player, two as head coach and two as assistant coach. In NBA history, only his former teammates Bill Russell and Sam Jones have won more champion rings than players.
Former match manager Jones was crowned NBA champion for eight consecutive seasons from 1959 to 1966. The following year, after winning the eighth title, he finished his career as a basketball player.
He later began a coaching career and in the 1971/1972 season, as an assistant to former teammate Bill Sherman, he became an NBA champion with the Los Angeles Lakers.
In the 1973/74 season, at the helm of Baltimore’s Capital Bullets (from next season’s Washington Bullets), Jones began coaching, leading the unit for three years.
In 1981, as an assistant coach, he won another championship with the Celtics, but two years later Jones became the team’s head coach. He led the Celtics for five consecutive seasons, winning championships in 1984 and 1986 as head coach.
In the early 1990s, Jones also led the Seattle SuperSonics team for two seasons.
In February 1967, the Celtics immortalized Jones’ 25th issue.
Jones, along with Russell on the University of San Francisco team, became a two-time National College Sports Association (NCAA) champion in the 1950s. He is also the champion of the 1956 Melbourne Olympics.
Jones, Russell, Clyde Lavlet, Jerry Lucas, Queens Bakner, Irwin Johnson and Michael Jordan are the only ones to have won the “Triple Crown” – winning NCAA, NBA and Olympic games.
In 1989, Jones was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame named after Neismith.
