The main family dynasties of Formula 1

This 2021 will be an important date for the Formula 1 , because the son of one of its great champions will debut in the category. Mick Schumacher (21 years old), son of Michael and nephew of Ralf, aspires to try to imitate in some way the achievements of his father, seven times champion. If he were to be champion, he would equal the two families that have achieved it in the long history of F1: the Hill and the Rosberg , although in Formula 1 there are many other family dynasties.

The Hills made Formula 1 history by being the first family with a champion father and son. After Graham (father) succeeded in 1962 (BRM) and 1968 (Lotus), Damon (son) became in 1996 the first driver to imitate his father to win the premier class. That year he curiously beat Jaques Villeneuve, son of the laureate Gilles, with his Williams.

Keke and Nico Rosberg

In the category of champions from generation to generation, the Rosbergs have inscribed their name alongside the Hills, although several years later. In 1982, the Finn Keke Rosberg (Williams) won only one Grand Prix, in Switzerland, and despite that he was proclaimed world champion ahead of the French Didier Pironi. Thirty-four years later, in 2016, his German-born son Nico followed suit with Mercedes just before deciding to retire. Since 2014, he is the only one who has been able to curb the hegemony of his former teammate Lewis Hamilton, seven times world champion.

Gilles y Jaques Villeneuve

Against the prognosis, Jaques Villeneuve surpassed the legacy of his father Gilles, who died in a tragic accident in 1982 at the Belgian GP. Gilles had achieved six victories and was runner-up in the world in 1979, but his terrible accident prevented him from achieving the title he deserved for being a magnificent driver. Fourteen years later, his son Jaques did him justice with the world title won with Williams.

The name Brabham is pure Formula 1 history. Besides drivers, it has provided equipment and engines to the premier class. Jack Brabham was the initiator and great reference. He debuted in 1955 and competed for 15 years with 14 victories in 123 contested great prizes. But above all he was remembered for winning three world championships in 1959, 1960 and 1966.

In 1990, on the 20th anniversary of Jack’s retirement, his sons Gary and David tried their luck in the category, although they did not fare as well as their father. Gary failed to qualify for any of the big prizes he tried (USA and Brazil, with the Life team). David went on to participate in 24 grands prix in 1990 and 1994, with Simtek and Brabham. His best result was a 10th place finish in 1994.

One of the strongest candidates to be world champion for youth and talent, Max Verstappen, also comes from a school with a family tradition. Jos competed between 1994 and 2003 and went through various teams such as Benettón, Arrows or Minardi, although he never achieved a victory. Quite the opposite of his son, who is also the youngest driver in history to win a Formula 1 GP. He did it in 2016, with 18 years, 7 months and 15 days at the Spanish GP. With 117 races, Max has already run more Grands Prix than his father (107), nicknamed ‘The Boss’ despite not having achieved victories.

1978 F1 World Champion and 1969 Indianapolis 500 winner, American Mario Andretti is a motorsport legend. And his descendants perpetuate his name. Like him, his son Michael raced in F1 (13 GP in 1993) before moving to IndyCar, where Marco Andretti, his grandson, is a benchmark.

Other dynasties

Other less important dynasties have been those of the Stuck (Hans and Hans Joachim) between the 50s and the 70s; The Piquets, in which Nelson was a three-time champion, with 23 victories and 60 podiums in his 204 F1 grands prix, but Nelsinho was no more than Fernando Alonso’s partner at Renault. The Nakajima (Satoru (87 Gp) and Kazuki), the Palmers (Jonathan and Jolyon), the Winkelhock (Manfred and Markus) and the Magnussen (Jan and Kevin) are other surnames with father and son as drivers in Formula 1 .
