The delay of the Olympic Games in Tokyo 2020 will cost 2,225 million

The organizing committee of the Tokyo 2020 Olympics yesterday encrypted in 2,225 million euros the extra cost they will have to face due to postponement of the appointment last summer forced by the harshness of the pandemic of the coronavirus. The organizers of the event had been going since last March, when the International Olympic Committee and the Japanese Government finally decided to postpone the Games for a year, studying the economic impact of the postponement.

The final figure was released after a meeting between the organizing committee itself, the Japanese government and the Tokyo authorities, which will also be the three main responsible for covering this millionaire extra cost. Of the 2,225 million, 1,800 correspond to the extension of the rental of the venues or extra labor expenses and the rest to preventive measures to avoid the spread of the coronavirus among athletes and spectators.

The metropolitan government of Tokyo will assume the payment of almost 1,000 million euros, the organizing committee about 815 million and the Government of Japan will face the rest, most of which will go to health measures. The 2,225 million must be added to the last official budget of the Games, which estimated its cost at almost 11,000 million. To reduce costs, among other measures, the organizers will simplify the opening and closing ceremonies.

The Games should begin on July 23, although Japan is in the midst of a national debate on whether to hold it due to the cost overrun and the global health situation.
