That Cavendish finances his own signing raises suspicions in the peloton

Although discreet, some voices have expressed their doubts about the signing of Mark Cavendish by Deceuninck. The reason is that the cyclist from the Isle of Man will be in charge of financing the operation through some private sponsorships, so it will not cost the team anything.

The running unions are studying whether, under the guise of attracting commercial firms, it is not really about Cavendish paying to run, covertly. The movement generates misgivings in the squad, because the door can be opened to anyone with the money can buy a position on a professional team. It is something that, openly at least, is not allowed by the UCI.

Deceuninck’s manager, Patrick Lefévère, in fact, acknowledged that he opened the doors of his team to Cavendish when he proposed to bear the expenses. Lefévère never repeats a cyclist who has left his team. He had only made two exceptions in twenty years, Dries Devenyns and Kevin De Weert. It is the first case with a foreigner. He raced in the Quick-Step between 2013 and 2015.
