Hoffenheim pushed past Augsburg in the table and reduced the gap to the Europa League places to four points. The hosts, who had qualified ahead of time for the knockout round of the current Europa League on Thursday, determined the match over long periods.
TSG coach Sebastian Hoeneß saw a great move early on. The ball came to Christoph Baumgartner on the left side at high speed from his own half. The Austrian international crossed the ball to compatriot Grillitsch, who had no trouble with his head. Both Austrians, like the Croat Andrej Kramaric, had rotated back into the team after the Europa League game.
Focus on Austrians
After falling behind, the Augsburgers wavered. Goalkeeper Rafal Gikiewicz had to defuse the direct acceptance by Sebastian Rudy (22nd) and Baumgartner (25th). But then the equalizer fell out of nowhere: Caligiuri headed into the goal after a good cross from ÖFB legionnaire Michael Gregoritsch. The game became more open.
Only 27 seconds after the break, the Hoffenheim team cheered again: Grillitsch tricked FCA captain Jeffrey Gouweleeuw in the penalty area and carefully pushed the ball in with his left to make it 2-1. Bebou, who had already met in Mainz the previous week, made it 3-1 after a nice solo.
