Sarri wins the derby

He waited, but finally the big day of Girona handball arrived. A date that both Bordils and Sarrià fans must have marked on the calendar. Of course, he did it without an audience. A hobby that gathered outside the White-and-Green pavilion to at least be a little closer to its players. And a Girona derby that did not disappoint anyone, intense and exciting until the end, and that ended in victory for the Sarrians (24-26). In this way, those of Salva Puig make a leap in the classification. They climb to the fifth position – the one that allows them to play the promotion to ASOBAL and gives the peace of mind of knowing that they will play one more year in the Silver Division. On the other hand, Pau Campos’ men are sinking a little deeper and still don’t know the taste of victory this season.

Some locals who, knowing the importance of the match and the injection of morale that victory would entail, never gave up. Even when they lost by six goals (5-11) and had made the first half, in the words of his coach, “disastrous.” Pau Campos’s men knew how to row against the current to equalize the game (20-20) when there were still 10 minutes left to play. But in the final stretch, Salva Puig’s men knew how to manage their nerves better and, finally, they took the victory of Blanc-i-verd. Thus removing the thorn they had nailed for almost a year, when Bordils had prevailed in the UES pavilion (27-29).

A match that had several protagonists. First, local goalkeeper David Mach, who stopped two shots from seven yards – and other rival shots throughout the duel – and this allowed his team to take a slight lead in the opening bars (5-4) . Antonio Moreno, under the posts of the other goal, did not want to be less and became immense for many minutes of the first half, taking balls from all corners. A partial 0-7, with several lashes from outside the area of Pere Arnau, allowed the Sarria to take a six-goal lead (5-11). Bordils, who had been without a goal for thirteen minutes, were able to cut distances before the break (8-12), but it seemed that the dynamics were quite good for the Sarrians.

That changed in the second half. Tomàs Bañeras and Arnau Palahí were more inspired by their shots and Moreno no longer stopped as before. This meant that Pau Campos’ men were only one goal away when they had played 10 minutes into the second half (15-16). Those of Salva Puig had bad minutes in front of goal and the premises knew to take advantage of it to equalize the marker to 10 minutes to finish.

With 20-20 a new match began. The nerves that had been in the early bars were back on track. And it was here that the other visiting goalkeeper appeared, Aleix Toro, who with a couple of stops of merit made his team have a two-goal advantage (23-25). Josep Reixach put emotion from seven meters to half a minute of the end (24-25), but Pòrtulas sentenced for Sarrià (24-26).
