The Benders say they are increasingly suffering from physical problems. “This choice has nothing to do with the club, but with our health and our families,” say the former internationals. “We think it will be difficult to still play at a high level after the summer. Anyone who knows us knows that we give 100 percent every day. However, this is becoming more and more difficult due to the pain and physical problems that we increasingly have to deal with. ”
Internationals
Lars Bender has been playing for Leverkusen since 2009. The midfielder, nineteen-time international of the ‘Mannschaft’, had to give up the captaincy to the Chilean Charles Aranguiz at the beginning of this season. Sven Bender came over from Borussia Dortmund in 2017, with which he had become champion in the Bundesliga twice. The defender played seven international matches. The Bender brothers were part of the Olympic team that took silver at the 2016 Games in Rio de Janeiro.
Technical director Rudi Völler praises the brothers’ exceptional sporting achievements. “There are only a few players in the Bundesliga such as Lars and Sven. They stand for football class, extreme professionalism and reliability, for willpower and a willingness to work hard. ” The Benders emphasize that they would like to successfully conclude their last season. Leverkusen is in second place in the German league.
