Persipura has suffered four losses by PSSI regarding the Asian Competition

Jakarta

Persipura Jayapura feels aggrieved because it is not appointed to the 2021 AFC Cup. This is not the first time Mutiara Hitam has clashed with PSSI over Asian competitions.

The worst happened in 2012 when PSSI forgot to register Persipura for the Asian Champions League (LCA). Persipura at that time was entitled to one LCA ticket because it was the winner of the 2010/11 Indonesian Super League.

Not accepting this, Persipura Jayapura also demanded PSSI to the Sports Arbitration Court (CAS) and compensation Rp. 20 billion. CAS granted the lawsuit and Persipura was finally allowed to continue to join LCA, but had to go through the play-off route.

Unfortunately Persipura’s steps were stopped in the qualifying round because they lost 3-0 to Adelaide United. One of Adelaide United’s winning goals at that time was scored by Sergio van Dijk, who later naturalized Indonesia.

If PSSI hadn’t been careless at that time, Persipura had the right to an automatic LCA ticket. Now, the same problem arises again because of the controversy over the PSSI appointing Persija instead of Persipura to the 2021 AFC Cup.

Persipura also asked for an explanation from PSSI. However, they will not take extreme steps like 2012 by demanding PSSI to CAS.

“Not that far. We have written, let PSSI proceed. Hopefully there will be an explanation in the near future,” Assistant Manager of Persipura Bento Madubun told detikSport about the potential to sue PSSI again.

“If the decision remains like that, we will remain compliant if there is an explanation in accordance with the rules,” he added.

PSSI has also harmed Persib Bandung and Persipura by not being registered to appear at AFC Cup 2017.

So, the total of Persipura has been harmed by PSSI four times. First in 2006 (LCA), 2012 (LCA), 2017 (AFC Cup), and most recently 2021 (AFC Cup).

Editor’s note: This news was previously entitled ‘Persipura Has Suffered Five Times by PSSI regarding Asian Competitions’ and then changed to ‘Persipura Has Suffed PSSI Four Times about Asian Competitions’. The change was made due to an incorrect mention of the data for the Persipura champions in 2008.
