According to Mark Maske of the Washington Post, the NFL could extend the regular season by a week to prepare for contingencies in the fight against COVID-19.

An extra week is reportedly one of several options the NFL is considering after two week four games were postponed.

Although week 18 was discussed, another source said the talks were at an early stage and there had been “no serious discussion” about extending the regular season.

The Tennessee Titans game against the Pittsburgh Steelers has been postponed to Week 7. Meanwhile, the game between the New England Patriots and Kansas City Chiefs has been postponed to Monday after positive tests.

If the NFL adds an 18th week, it could postpone the start of the playoffs or eliminate the extra week between the Conference Championship Games and the Super Bowl.

The NFL plans to hold a conference call with the head coaches and general managers of all 32 teams on Monday to highlight the importance of adhering to the league’s COVID-19 protocols.
