Marc Márquez, operated for the third time on the right arm

Marc Márquez, injured in the right humerus since his fall in the first GP of the season in Jerez, in July, his arm was operated on for the third time this Thursday in the Ruber Clinic from Madrid. As confirmed by his team, the operation on the Catalan pilot lasted 8 hours.


The explanation

According to Honda, the third operation is due to “the slow healing of the humerus, which has not improved with the specific treatment of shock waves”

In a statement issued by Honda, the team explains that Márquez underwent a new operation on his right arm “as a consequence of the slow healing of the humerus, which has not improved with specific shock wave treatment ”.



The Catalan pilot was operated on at the Ruber Internacional Hospital in Madrid in a pseudoartrosis right humerus. The operation was performed by the team formed by Doctors Samuel Antuña, Ignacio Roger de Oña, Juan from Miguel, Aitor Ibarzabal and Andrea Garcia
Villanueva.


A graft

During the operation, Márquez was implanted with an iliac crest bone graft – a fragment of the hip bone – to help heal the humerus

The intervention consisted “in the removal of the previous titanium plate and the placement of a new plate with the incorporation of a iliac crest bone graft with a free corticoperiosteal flap ”.

The surgical procedure lasted eight hours and “passed without incident,” according to Honda.


Consultations with other doctors

Seeing that the bone did not solidify, Márquez decided to consult different medical specialists, from Red Bull in Austria and from the Mayo Clinic in the USA.

The Cervera pilot had surgery for first time on July 21 from a fracture of the right humerus. The team of doctor Mir u installeda plate with 12 screws to fix the fracture. However, the Repsol Honda rider was operated on again on August 3 when the titanium plate broke due to physical effort caused by a hasty return. Marc left the Andalusian GP on Saturday July 25, due to the pain he felt, without being able to complete the classification.



From second operation Marquez expected to be recovered in two or three months, towards the beginning of November. However, weeks went by and the periodic medical tests did not announce that the bone was solidified, so in the last weeks he chose to consult other medical sources to know diverse opinions, among others, of specialists of Red Bull in Austria, and the Mayo Clinic from Rochester (USA), where he had been operated on for the leg Alberto Puig, your team manager.

With this third operation, Marquez was risk to not arrive on time to premiere of the World Cup 2021, in March. Deadlines Recovery could be lengthened, in such damaged bone, by between four and six months.
