Manchester City managed to close the Champions League group phase with three points. Entertain Marseille on Group C’s last matchday, The Citizens won 3-0.

At the Etihad Stadium, Thursday (10/12/2020) early morning WIB, City’s winning goals were scored by Ferran Torres (48 ‘), Sergio Aguero (77’), and Raheem Sterling (90 ‘).

With this result, City topped the final standings in Group C with 16 points, five wins and a draw. Meanwhile, Marseille sat in the caretaker position with three points.

The course of the match

Riyad Mahrez threatened Marseille’s goal in the 8th minute, but Steve Mandanda blocked his left-footed shot. Four minutes later, Aymeric Laporte’s header also failed to put City ahead.

The visitors try to reply. Valere Germain had a chance in the 14th minute, but his header was also off target. City returned to attack in the 24th minute, but Phil Foden’s long-range shot was still up.

Marseille had another chance in the 32nd minute through Dimitri Payet, but his shot from outside the penalty box was cleared by City goalkeeper Zack Steffen.

Mahrez again wasted a chance to score, after his shot in the 33rd minute went wide. Morgan Sanson also came close to giving Marseille the lead, but his shot in the 42nd minute dived narrowly beside the post

Marseille got another chance through Pape Gueye in the 43rd minute, but Steffen could secure his close range shot. Score a goalless draw lasted until the break.

In the second half, City managed to get ahead quickly in the 48th minute. Starting from City’s attack on the right, Germain tried to cut the ball, but instead it rolled into the feet of Ferran Torres, who immediately grabbed a shot with a measured shot that Mandanda could not block.

Winning by one goal, City are increasingly excited. Foden almost added the lead in the 59th minute, but his shot was still secured by Mandanda. Six minutes later, it was Kyle Walker’s long shoot that was cleared by the French national team goalkeeper.

In the 77th minute, City finally managed to add a goal. Starting from Nathan Ake’s header which was pushed over by Mandanda, Sergio Aguero managed to throw the ball up, who immediately sent the ball into the Marseille goal.

Winning two goals, City continued to press. Pep Guardiola’s squad finally scored the third goal in the 90th minute. Torres shoots the ball at Marseille and Mandanda is able to push it away, but the ball hits Alvaro Gonzalez and ends at Raheem Sterling’s feet who easily hits the ball into the net.
