Klasnič will receive over one hundred million crowns for kidney damage

Former football player Ivan Klasnič will receive over four million euros (more than 105 million crowns) from his former club Werder Bremen and the doctors who cared for him for kidney damage.

Today, the 40-year-old Croatian agreed to a settlement with the defendant at the Higher Regional Court in Bremen. The ARD television station informed about it.

The amount is significantly higher than originally set by the regional court. In 2017, he ordered doctors to pay Klasnic the painful 100,000 euros and, in addition, to pay for a lost profit of about one million euros. The former assailant, who has had three kidney transplants, did not agree.

His lawyer was satisfied with today’s agreement. “This new amount is more in line with the feeling of justice. However, no money in the world can compensate for the significant and lasting damage to my client’s health,” Matthias Teichner told ARD.

Klasnič sued the club and his former doctors for receiving painkillers, which in too high doses can lead to kidney damage. According to the SID agency, they will receive compensation and pain from insurance companies. “At least now the doctors were willing to express their regret. In my opinion, it took too long,” said Klasnič’s lawyer.

Klasnič won the Bundesliga title and the German Cup with Bremen in 2004. He underwent his first kidney transplant in 2007 and Werder left a year later. The participant in two European and one world championships then played until 2013 for Nantes, Bolton and Mainz.
