Karl-Heinz Rummenigge SPORT1 about:

… the maximum penalty for Leroy Sané in Leverkusen: I think our trainer explained that well. His job is to do everything to ensure that the team wins. He wanted to bring the young Musiala to score the goal after all – and it succeeded. The coach did everything right. It is clear that he (Sané, editor’s note) does not like it. The good Lord gave him incredible talents. He can dribble and has an incredible left foot. I don’t think he’s really caught up with this FC Bayern gene yet. Thomas Müller marched yesterday. But he’s not as gifted with talent as Leroy Sané. So now he has to work on these talents. That is his job. We threw everything into the balance so that he would come to Bayern. He has to show it now!

… the future prospects of Sané in Munich: I think he can have a good future at Bayern. We encourage every player, but we also challenge. He has to internalize that. He now has to take the next step. He has to adapt his character to FC Bayern. Everything will be forgiven, but you have to throw everything into the balance to leave the field as a winner. He has to learn that. The team will not adapt to his character.

Rummenigge: “I don’t know any player who has such a will to win”

… Robert Lewandowski and Manuel Neuer: Those were the two best players in 2020. The one in the back of the goal has rightly become a world goalkeeper and Lewandowski has become a world footballer. It was always his dream and he thought he could only fulfill it at Real Madrid. At the front he just does what you need – goals. I always thought Gerd Müller’s record would never be jeopardized again. Robert now has 17 goals after 13 games. He is also working on this record.

… Lewandowski’s development: He came in 2014 and had a move to Real in the back of his mind for a while. He really wanted to win the Champions League and the title of world footballer. He is extremely ambitious. I don’t know any player who has such a will to win. I think it clicked for him two years ago when we renewed his contract. Then he saw that we weren’t going to hand it over. No matter what offer comes up, we don’t make it. We recognized the worth of a Robert Lewandowski. It’s like a kind of Munich reinsurance.

… Lewandowski’s role off the pitch: Robert is an incredibly good conversationalist. I’ve talked to him many times this year. He goes deep. In football we often tend to cover up a cloak of silence about something. He addresses mistakes when we have mistakes in the team or in the club. So it has become a very important factor. After winning the title in Lisbon, I spoke to him on the pitch and he said: “Do you know why we won? Because we had the best bank. We can now start an era.” He stood there with the trophy in hand and was already thinking about the future again. That’s what makes him so important.

the non-election of Hansi Flick as world coach: He would have deserved it – if you win five titles. He was also a little disappointed. He would have liked to become one. I told him to look at the five cups. But you could tell that he was disappointed.

Bundesliga as “benchmark in Europe”

… the standing of the Bundesliga in international comparison: We always have a tendency to make ourselves small. I would like to remind you again that all four CL teams and both EL participants easily qualified for the knockout round. The current benchmark in Europe is the Bundesliga! The games in Germany are currently the best in the whole world of football. The others are good too, but the Bundesliga has gotten better.

… the participation of Munich in the Club World Cup: The team and the coach came to me and said I should talk to FIFA and Infantino (FIFA President, editor’s note) so that it could take place. The players want to go there to win the sixth title. Only one team has succeeded so far – FC Barcelona in 2009. The guys are hot for titles and they want to win everything. We don’t go there to make money. That is manageable. It’s just a gesture to give the team the opportunity to win this title.

Rummenigge to Alaba: It wasn’t enough

… the stand at David Alaba: We had a lot of conversations. The goal was always to extend the contract. Then there was a final meeting with a deadline in October. Our offer was not accepted and then our President withdrew the offer. That is the state of affairs. There have been no new conversations since then. To be honest, I don’t know whether there will be any further talks. We have taken many steps towards the counselor and the father. We have put everything that was possible in the balance. But then you just have to accept: It wasn’t enough.

… the future of Jérôme Boateng: We sit down at the club in the second half of the season and then discuss how things will go on with him. You also have to be patient with players over 30.

… a possible association work after his era at Bayern: I know what I can and what I don’t want. But when I see all the association structures, everything is resisting to me. You don’t have anything to do with football anymore, it’s politics. The DFB has a lot to do at the moment, but please do it yourself.

… his relationship with Uli Hoeneß: He is still on the supervisory board and is still an important member of the supervisory board. I have a good relationship with him. We had phases where we worked very well together, but also sometimes irritations because we had different opinions. Doors were blown shut – but none that wouldn’t have opened again. We have a relationship that works.

… the possible introduction of a European Super League and the reform of the UEFA Champions League: We are not interested in a Super League being installed. Discussions about it always came from the south of Europe. I think the 2024 Champions League reform will be an important step. The current group stage is a bit too boring for me. UEFA’s plans will be more sustainable reform. UEFA is doing a big blow here – and I like everything I’ve seen so far.

Rummenigge: Guardiola, Heynckes and Co. cannot save Schalke

… the situation at FC Schalke 04: In the last two games I got the impression that the team is trying to get the cart back on its feet. One must not forget that the whole club is in turmoil. They have a situation like none of the other 17 clubs. But you can only calm down if you win two or three games. You have to win now. They didn’t win 28 games – that’s crazy. There is a lack of self-confidence. You can ask Guardiola, Mourinho or Heynckes to go to the bank, it won’t work.

… the task of sports director Jochen Schneider in Gelsenkirchen: He had a difficult legacy to inherit. Financially they were already in the problem. The poor guy can’t help it. You just need a break now. The problem hasn’t been there for six months. 2020 is a problematic year. Viewed soberly, the club was already in trouble beforehand.

… Ralf Rangnick as a possible coach candidate, also at Schalke: He proved in Hoffenheim and Leipzig that he is a good coach. I am amazed that it is on the market. He’s a caliber from the top shelf. He is of course a demanding coach. The responsibility would have to be put on the table for him. But he’s a great professional and I think of him a lot.

Rummenigge: The reason for the BVB crisis

… the situation at Borussia Dortmund after the defeat at Union Berlin and the importance of Erling Haaland: Haaland’s injury affects them very much. The whole game was tailored to him. Moukoko did a good job, but Haaland is just a big caliber.

… a possible Haaland transfer: I think Dortmund would not have got Haaland without a release clause. The business model before Corona might even have worked.

Bayern boss: “Bring more rationality into business”

… the financial situation in the Corona period: We are now playing without spectators and there is no income. So we all need to review our business models. We have to bring a little more rationality into the business. It is noticeable that transfer fees were called for about 15 percent lower last summer. In the case of salaries in the top range, however, it is only now slowly beginning to decline. The top clubs’ payrolls are actually way too high for the problems we’re facing.

… the distribution of the TV money and the criticism expressed by Andreas Rettig: Herr Rettig is not worth commenting on. It is also known that FC Bayern abstained from the last decision by the DFL Presidium. I would not rate it in such a way that we are satisfied with the distribution. Money was taken from the big clubs to give it to the little ones. I always believe that performance has to pay off. You can always take more away from the big clubs. But the entire Bundesliga must have an interest in us being internationally competitive. If we want to remain competitive there, we need strong clubs in the Bundesliga. The big clubs are the locomotive. We have a very solidaristic distribution of money, which incidentally has already migrated from top to bottom this year. So I don’t put on Rettig’s shoe.
