Football: Baumgartlinger helps Bayer in second place

At Schalke, Michael Langer, who was in goal this time, could not prevent the clear defeat. For the regular number three it was not a successful debut in the Schalke goal, which Langer only guarded because Frederik Rönnow and Ralf Fährmann were out. In his first competitive game since July 6, 2017 – the second in the German upper house for over 13 years (for Stuttgart) – the 35-year-old from Vorarlberg had to reach behind him for the first time after ten minutes. The product of a duel between Leverkusen’s ÖFB team defender Aleksandar Dragovic and Malick Thiaw was a Schalke header own goal.

In the second half Baumgartlinger headed – again after a corner – to 2-0 (67th). The goal was not only the third one within a month, but Baumgartlinger reached a new personal “milestone”: Salzburg, who like Dragovic played against Schalke, had more than two goals this season in his time in Germany since the 2011/12 season never scored. A goal by Patrik Schick (78th) sealed the sixth win of the season for Leverkusen and the seventh Schalke bankruptcy.

Stuttgart ends the drought in Bremen

VfB Stuttgart won against Werder Bremen for the first time in 14 years and celebrated their third win of the season with a 2-1 win at the Weser Stadium. When the Swabians deserved 2: 1, Silas Wamangituka scored both goals (31st / foul penalty, 90th + 1) for the newcomer, who was still unbeaten abroad and who is much closer to the European Cup places in the table than to the relegation ranks. Davie Selke’s goal in Bremen came too late (93rd).

Bremen have not won seven games in a row. The lead over the relegation place is four points. Romano Schmid, who was loaned to Wolfsberger AC last year, made his Bundesliga debut from the 80th minute, Marco Friedl played through in the defense center. On the other side, Sasa Kalajdzic stormed for Stuttgart for an hour.
