Federer dropped out of the Australian Open

Roger Federer confirmed what many feared and he dropped out of the Australian Open, even though he was already entered and in the main draw. The reason? He does not feel 100% from the physical and prefers to wait to recover in the best way his right knee, which has already undergone two interventions.

“Roger has decided not to play the Australian Open 2021. He has had a strong evolution in the last couple of months with his knee and physical capacity. However, after consulting with his team, he decided that it was better for him in the long term to return to the competitive tennis after Australia ‘‘, explained Tony Godsick, representative of the Swiss. He added: “I will start the talks this coming week for tournaments that start in late February and then I will start putting together a schedule for the rest of the year.”

The start of activities for the main Australian Open tournament was postponed for three weeks due to the coronavirus pandemic and is now scheduled to kick off on February 8 at Melbourne Park. Federer, 39, is training at his vacation home in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.

The tennis player has not participated in any tournaments since late January at the Australian Open, when he was clearly injured in a straight-set loss to eventual champion Novak Djokovic in the semi-finals. Shortly after, he played a charity exhibition tournament with Rafael Nadal in front of a record attendance of 50,000 at a soccer stadium in Cape Town, South Africa.
