FC Schalke 04: declaration of love from Mesut Özil

A historically bad year lies behind FC Schalke 04, which occupies 18th and last place in the Bundesliga after 13 matchdays. With Mesut Özil, one of the most prominent former Schalke players is still committed to his ex-club.

In 2005, Mesut Özil, born in Gelsenkirchen, moved from the offspring of Rot-Weiss Essen to the Schalke Knappenschmiede. The playmaker then tied the football boots for the miners for a total of three years, celebrated the 2006 German A youth championship in a royal blue jersey and made his first steps in professional business.

Then Özil moved from Schalke to Werder Bremen for five million euros, then after the 2010 World Cup to Real Madrid and now a good seven years ago to Arsenal – for the German record transfer fee of 47 million euros at the time.

However, the now 32-year-old has not forgotten his roots. In a question and answer on Twitter under the motto #askmesut, Özil responded to the question about his childhood favorite club with “Schalke 04” and a blue heart emoji – a gesture that should be noted with benevolence from the badly battered Revierklub.

Özil’s return to FC Schalke 04 is probably out of the question

However, nobody at Schalke should seriously dream of Özil’s return to his old place of work.

The 2014 world champion no longer plays a role at Arsenal and is always associated with an exit. For the clammy Schalke, Özil should simply be too expensive.

He is said to earn more than 20 million euros a year in London and, despite his role as a reservist, allegedly received a so-called “loyalty bonus” of around eight million euros in September.

In the Q&A, Özil also commented on his football idols and named in this context, in addition to Zinédine Zidane, the Gunners icons Dennis Bergkamp and Robert Pires as well as the Turkish ex-professional Ridvan Dilmen and Italy’s living goalkeeper legend Gianluigi Buffon. They are all “great people off the pitch,” enthused Özil.
