“Everything has escalated a bit”

Rot-Weiss Essen created a sensation by reaching the last 16 in the DFB Cup. But after the game, supporters of the club gathered in front of the stadium despite the corona pandemic.

After entering the round of 16 of the DFB Cup for the first time in almost 13 years, the corona rules were probably overridden on Essen’s Hafenstrasse. A few hundred fans of the traditional club Rot-Weiss Essen gathered after the happy 3: 2 (2: 1) against the unloved neighbor Fortuna Düsseldorf for a spontaneous party in front of the stadium. “It’s been a great evening for us,” said RWE trainer Christian Neidhart when fireworks were already being set off in the background.

The bliss began with a spontaneous car parade with a horn concert and continued with fireworks in front of the stadium. The television pictures after the next Essen Cup coup made it clear on Wednesday evening that distance rules and the ban on several households from meeting were being disregarded.

The police did not find any violations of the Corona regulations on the evening in front of the stadium. “About 150 to 200 people have gathered. The group behaved in conformity with the corona and disbanded shortly afterwards,” said a police spokesman for the German press agency on Thursday.

“Everything has escalated a bit,” said Essen striker Simon Engelmann, who took advantage of a serious mistake by Fortuna keeper Raphael Wolf to make it 1-0 for the fourth division team (15th minute).
