Covid-19 presence is determined in “Liepāja” hockey team and “Valmiera Glass” / “Vidzeme University College” basketball club

The portal reports that there are information about five or six hockey players who have contracted Covid-19 in the public space. The head coach Normunds Sējējs has also confirmed that several hockey players are infected with the virus, but the exact numbers are not named.

It is also reported that even before the December 13 game, in which the two clubs met, two “Mogo” / LSPA players had a fever, so the hockey players stayed at home. Later, in the Riga team, Covid-19 was diagnosed by a large number of hockey players, but the portal reports that the number of patients is approaching two dozen.

The portal reports that four Liepaja residents were diagnosed with the virus last weekend, but they were next to each other in the locker room, so it is hoped that the virus will not affect the entire club.

Since the last games, Liepaja residents have not gathered together.

On Friday, the coaches and service staff of “Liepājas” club performed Covid-19 tests, but all the results were negative. Repeated inspections are planned for December 28.

The presence of Covid-19 had already been detected in Daugavpils “Dinaburga”, “Zemgale” / LLU, as well as “Olimp” / “Venta 2002” teams.

“Olimp” / “Venta 2002” is still in the lead of the tournament table with 27 points in 16 matches. “Zemgale” / LLU follows with 24 points in 15 games, but “Liepāja” and “Mogo” / LSPA have 21 points in 18 games, while ten points in 19 games are “Prizma” / IHS. Hockey school “Riga” has scored six points in nine matches, and Daugavpils “Dinaburga” has scored 15 points in 15 matches.

In the 2020/2021 season OHL plays “Mogo” / LSPA, “Olimp” / “Venta 2002”, “Zemgale” / LLU, Hockey school “Riga”, Daugavpils “Dinaburga”, “Prizma” / IHS and “Liepājas” .

Last season, eight teams played in the Latvian Super League, but in the 2020/21 season there will be one team less, because “Kurbads” does not play in the tournament.

The playoffs were not played last season, but “Olimp” was declared the winner of the local championship. The newcomer to the tournament won the decisive points after “Riga” did not come to the last match of the season with “Kurbads” team.

With the success, Olimp earned the opportunity to compete in the Continental Cup organized by the International Hockey Federation (IIHF), but the international competition was canceled.

Meanwhile, the presence of Covid-19 has been recorded in the basketball club “Valmiera Glass” / “Vidzeme University College”, therefore the whole team has been quarantined for ten days, the club reports on Monday.

A positive Covid-19 assay test was received on Sunday, December 20th. The infection was also confirmed in another person on Monday, December 21, when the whole team was tested for Covid-19.

Since the approval of the first positive case, as required by the regulations of the Cabinet of Ministers, the whole team has been quarantined for ten days.

The team said in a statement that the people of Valmiera had complied with the restrictions imposed by Covid-19 with the greatest responsibility, however, the virus had also noticed the club’s representatives.

In the Latvian-Estonian joint championship, the people of Valmiera played the last match on Saturday, when they gave up the “Liepāja” team at 72:89.

“Valmiera Glass” / “Vidzeme University College” has won only two successes in 12 games this season and is in the fifth position among six Latvian teams.

The calendar approved before the season provided that until December 6, the teams of each country will play only with each other, but international games will take place in the continuation of the season. Given the epidemiological situation in the region, the league board decided to play the main event in both countries separately.

The calendar of Latvian team games for two more rounds has now been approved, which will be provisionally played until the middle of February. The continuation of the season will be decided later.

The preliminary championship playoff system provides an opportunity to organize a joint elimination tournament in the spring, playing between teams from different countries.

In the main tournament of the third season of the United Championship, 13 teams were scheduled to play a two-round tournament, followed by a playoffs – a quarter-final series and a “Final Four” tournament.

13 teams – six Latvian teams – “VEF Rīga”, “Ogre”, “Ventspils”, “Valmiera Glass” / “Vidzeme University”, participate in the “Pafbet” Latvian-Estonian Basketball League (LIBL) championship in the 2020/21 season, “University of Latvia” and “Liepaja”, as well as seven Estonian teams – Tallinn “Kalev” / “Cramo”, Rapla “Avis Utilitas”, “Parnu Sadam”, “University of Tartu”, Rakvere “Tarvas”, Tallinn “Kalev” / TLU and TalTech.

In the first Latvian-Estonian joint league tournament in the 2018/2019 season, Ventspils won 15 teams in both the main tournament and the Final 4, but the 2019/2020 season remained unfinished, ranking first in the main tournament, which was suspended due to the Covid-19 pandemic. occupying “VEF Rīga”, the second – “Ogrei”, the third – Tallinn Kalev “/” Cramo “and the fourth -” Ventspils “.
