Cavani, 3 rounds and fine for the post judged to be racist

The Football Association has closed the investigation into the Man Utd striker, who had replied “gracias negrito” to a friend on Instagram

Three days of disqualification, a “re-education” course and a fine of about 110 thousand euros for Edinson Cavani: this is the decision of the Football Association, which closed the investigation for the sentence – judged racist – written and posted by the “Matador” after the victory over Southampton last October. “Gracias negrito”, the 33-year-old Manchester Utd striker replied to a friend on Instagram who congratulated him on the match against the Saints. The Red Devils’ next three engagements are in three different competitions: Cavani will miss home matches with Aston Villa in the Premier League, Manchester City in the League Cup and Watford in the FA Cup.

Improper phrase

The investigation was opened because the comment posted on the Manchester Utd player’s Instagram page was deemed offensive and / or improper, with the aggravating circumstance of references to color, race and ethnic origin. The attacker had justified himself, pointing out the intent of his words, often used in South America in a joking and absolutely non-racist way. Manchester United had underlined the club’s anti-racist commitment in every venue, but it was not enough for Cavani to avoid the sanction.
