Bundesliga: FC Bayern Munich beats Bayer Leverkusen thanks to Robert Lewandowski

In the top game of the 13th matchday, FC Bayern Munich won 2-1 (1-1) at Bayer Leverkusen. Patrik Schick had brought Peter Bosz’s team into the lead against the record champions (14th minute), Robert Lewandowski equalized (44th) and turned the game in stoppage time (90th + 3). This means that Bayern (30 points) take the lead in the table ahead of Leverkusen, who are now second (28 points), while RB Leipzig (28 points) follows in third place.

Leverkusen took the lead early: After a short corner, Nadiem Amiri played a soulful, long cross, at the end of which Schick was ready. The Czech took the volley ball out of the air, hit it perfectly with his left foot and gave Manuel Neuer no chance to defend himself (14th).

Afterwards, the game remained balanced – with slight advantages for the Leverkusen team, who were more secure on the ball and stronger in two fights. A second goal by Schick was rightly denied due to an offside position (28th), a conclusion by Moussa Diaby was blocked (29th).

The failure of Kingsley Coman, who was injured through no fault of his own and had to be replaced by Leroy Sané, seemed to weaken Bayern further (32nd). In fact, Munich found the game better towards the end of the first half and came through Lewandowski to equalize: The FIFA world footballer only had to head a cross from Thomas Müller into the empty goal after goalkeeper Lukas Hradecky and defender Jonathan Tah tried to clear each other had disabled (44th). The scene had only become dangerous due to a bad pass from Tah’s neighbor Edmond Tapsoba on his own sixteen.

Bayern made it into the second half well, Tah had to block a conclusion from Müller less than a minute after the restart at the six-yard (46th). The initial momentum didn’t last long, however, and the game shifted between the penalty areas. The teams rarely played their attacks to the end, but the Munich team looked more dangerous overall and had a good chance of taking the lead through Serge Gnabry (67th). Hradecky parried from an acute angle.

Kimmich returns

National player Joshua Kimmich celebrated his comeback in the closing stages: The defensive midfielder came on for Corentin Tolisso, it was Kimmich’s first appearance since his meniscus operation in early November. Bayern remained the better team, with Jamal Musiala, who replaced the disappointing Leroy Sané, hit the post (79th).

In stoppage time, Kimmich finally prepared the victory: Jonathan Tah played a bad pass, Bayern captured the ball and put Lewandowski, who scored with his 17th goal of the season to the final score (90 + 3). The defeat ended the Leverkusen streak, the last team in the league to be unbeaten after twelve match days.
