Borussia Dortmund, Edin Terzic – this is the new BVB coach

“I don’t have the time for nervousness. I’ve received a lot of messages, but there is just so much to do,” said the new BVB coach Edin Terzic at his presentation on Monday.

Right from his first big appearance on the microphone, he showed why Borussia Dortmund now needs someone like him. Terzic was a little nervous at first, but quickly recovered. He thanked ex-coach Lucien Favre and ex-assistant coach Manfred Stefes, humbly because of his role – as an assistant coach at the time – in the 1: 5 against VfB Stuttgart and then he showed above all two more things: fighting spirit and fire.

“As a coach, you have to serve different roles and that involves emotionality,” Terzic believes. At BVB everyone agrees that the new coach – who should definitely look after the Borussia until summer 2021 – has exactly this. And much more.

BVB deliberately signed Terzic

For Terzic, his new job is a big step, it is the first position as head coach of a professional club for the German-Croatian. From the point of view of those responsible at BVB, however, it is a logical and planned step.

The fact that Terzic is now taking on the job as an interim trainer is anything but a short-circuit act. (The table of the Bundesliga)

“We brought Edin back in 2018 against the background so that there would be no vacuum if something went wrong with the coach,” said BVB managing director Hans-Joachim Watzke picture: “So we already knew in 2018 that Edin would be our man if there ever was a fire.

BVB had deliberately obliged Terzic to take precautions in the event of an incident and to be able to react quickly with an internal solution in the event of a coach being dismissed. This ended Terzic’s wandering, which he had started from Dortmund.

Terzic was already a BVB youth coach while he was active

Terzic was born in Menden in the Sauerland and turned out to be a talented striker. He went on the hunt for goals for Westfalia Herne and SG Wattenscheid 09, among others, but did not go beyond the fourth division.

While still active, he started working for BVB in 2010. During Jürgen Klopp’s era, he was active as a scout and assistant coach for the youngsters for the black and yellow. At that time he mainly acted as the right hand of Hannes Wolf, who later became head coach at VfB Stuttgart and Hamburger SV and now trains the U18s of the German national team.

And then experienced coach Slaven Bilic played a role in Terzic’s development. The Croatian had the up-and-coming scout and coach analyze his opponents for the games of the Croatian national team, which he coached from 2006 to 2012. Bilic was delighted.

He subsequently asked Terzic if he would like to be his assistant coach when Bilic signed on with Besiktas Istanbul. “I still remember how you sat with me and told me that you had an offer from abroad and asked if you would get approval,” said Dortmund’s sports director Michael Zorc at the PK on Monday, which he shared denied with Terzic: “Of course we weren’t in the way, we brought you back and got to know you as an expert. And also as a good guy who brings along the necessary emotions.”

Terzic should kindle the team’s fire

Before BVB brought the current coach back to Dortmund, Bilic went to West Ham United. After four years, the Croatian apprenticeship came to an end.

In Lucien Favre’s team, Terzic was then primarily responsible for scouting the upcoming BVB opponents. But he was also very involved in the team and had many conversations with the players. On February 9, 2019, he represented the sick Favre. At that time, Borussia did not get past 3: 3 after a 3-0 lead against TSG Hoffenheim.

In the training sessions, he was not just a hat stand, but rather always on the job. It was clear at all times that Terzic is really passionate about his job. The problem: after SPORT1-Information, the collaboration with Favre was often more of a community of convenience. The ambitious Terzic had to slow down again and again out of respect for Favre and was sometimes slowed down by the head coach personally.

Now Terzic shouldn’t have to slow down – on the contrary. At BVB one hopes that he can sweep the fans away and rekindle the fire in the team.

“I am a product from Borussia Dortmund”

After the summer, Terzic will probably move back into the second tier and make way for a trainer with a larger format who brings more experience. Until then, however, he is something of an alternative to Favre, both as a guy and as a coach.

“I am a product from Borussia Dortmund. I come from the region and have been a fan for ages. I started here ten years ago and I am shaped by the past,” explained Terzic, and then came to talk about his philosophy: “It There are two ways you can win a football game. You can get one less goal to win a game, but you can always want to score an extra goal to win it. I’m more for the latter. “

To achieve that with one more goal, that should work on Tuesday evening at Werder Bremen. Borussia can no longer afford to slip up a lot, they are no longer on a Champions League spot.

“Everything went very quickly now, we had to think a lot. We have to show a reaction now, that was not Borussia Dortmund, what we showed on Saturday. We want to show a different face tomorrow,” confirmed Terzic.

All BVB fans can be sure of one thing: the new coach is someone who cares about the club: “It’s an unbelievable situation. I was born 30 kilometers from here and was at the stadium for the first time when I was nine. Nevertheless I never even dreamed that I would be in such a position here, but I noticed how quickly it can go. In the meantime, I’ve had a long-distance relationship with BVB and I had a lot of fun as an assistant coach. It’s such a big club with incredible importance in the region. “
