With Manuel Baum, FC Schalke has dismissed the second coach this season. Huub Stevens stepped in – and lost his first game. There should be a new coach in the new year. But the Schalke bosses have a favorite in mind.
In Gelsenkirchen, a crisis mood is the order of the day. At Christmas, FC Schalke 04 are in 18th place in the Bundesliga and have only four points on their account after 13 games. The team seems completely insecure, both defensively and offensively there is a lack of all corners and ends. Neither Manuel Baum nor his predecessor David Wagner could lead the team to a victory. Huub Stevens jumped in for the last Bundesliga game of the year – and also lost.
In the cup against Ulm, the “Kerkrade growler” will be on the sidelines again, after which another coach will take over. And apparently there is already a favorite for it: Alexander Zorniger. As Sky and the “Bild” newspaper report, the 53-year-old has the best cards.
Almost two years without a club
Schalke sports director Jochen Schneider already knows Zorniger from days together in Stuttgart and Leipzig. Zorniger has been without a club in Copenhagen since the end of his tenure at Brondby IF in early 2019, and most recently appeared as an expert on the Sky program “Matchplan”.
The Swabian is known for his risk-taking, attacking football and would breathe new life into the team.
There is still no confirmation from Schalke. Jochen Schneider only confirmed at the weekend that he had a favorite in mind. He did not reveal who that is on the Sky microphone.
