Alex De Miñaur: “I would stay with tennis like this, I would not change anything”

We have a new interview on our channel Youtube, again with one of the most promising players on the ATP circuit. Alex De Miñaur sits with Fernando Murciego to catch up on how his 2020 season has been, the difficulties that the quarantine left him, the secrets that the clay still hides from him and also to enter our Quick Round, where he will have to opt for Australia or Spain. Half an hour of interview to get to know the current number 23 in the world a little better. In addition to the video, we leave you here below some highlights of the conversation.

Change of Australian Open dates

“The new dates throw everything back a bit. From having everything planned to compete already from the first week of January, now everything has to be adjusted to reach the new dates in the best physical way possible. We will have to extend the preseason a little more, starting a little softer so as not to get burned to that first tournament ”.

– A very complicated 2020

“It has been a very difficult year. Beyond the COVID-19 issue, I was injured at the beginning of the season and that made it very hard. Tennis players are used to traveling continuously, I had not been home for three weeks in a long time, so being locked up for three months seemed very long. I also know that there are people who had a much worse time, but in my case it was a show for the body and the mind. However, I am happy with what we have been able to achieve, although I would have loved to do more. I am still in a very good situation, right now I am where I want to be and I know that next year can be great ”.

– Great role at the US Open, the place where you want to be

“It was one of the goals of this year, in the biggest tournaments to reach the quarter-finals, second weeks to the Grand Slams, to put myself in situations where I play with the best in the world every week. This is how you get on. It was the best result of the year, without a doubt. I feel like I want to be at the top, pushing as much as I can each week, going as far as possible in each tournament. I see my abilities to be there, but I need to have a full year without injuries ”.

– The clay, a pending examination

“It doesn’t worry me, it’s been a couple of years since I’ve been on clay quite well. Last year I was coming back from pubalgia and this year mentally I was very bad. It’s a surface that doesn’t complement my game like the others, but that doesn’t mean I can’t win games there. It is something that will come, first I need to have a couple of good victories so that confidence also plays its role ”.

– Changes in tennis

“There are things that make tennis special, like for example the five sets in the Grand Slam, it’s something nice. The thing is, people who don’t want to watch five-hour games, but I don’t know what the solution is. The line must be drawn between whether tennis is a spectator sport or a player sport. Now they have started doing different things, but I don’t know if I fully agree with them. The viewer likes to see something different from time to time, but I would stay with tennis as it is, it won’t change much ”.
