A difficult year also for basketball in Navarra

On Wednesday Basket Navarra disputed his postponed match of the fifth day against the Albacete. The last time both teams met on a pitch will go to the Navarrese basketball history, since that weekend and that victory (81-80) would mark a before and after. The before was everyday life, the after, life with coronavirus. And the basket sport froze radically thereafter. The same happened to Osés Ardoi Construction, who qualified for the promotion phase five days ahead, by winning 55-58 against Horta Lima Basket. But it would never be disputed.

The first news that Navarrese basketball was going to stop came on March 10. The Navarra Federation announced the suspension of the Arriondas and Infiesto Autonomous Teams Tournament, to which the minis Navarre teams were going to attend.

It was the preamble to everything that was going to happen from that moment on. The Spanish Minibasket Championship, the Sports Games, the Women’s League 2, LEB Silver and EBA championships were held behind closed doors and the autonomous matches with teams from other communities were postponed. They were the first decisions around basketball after State of alarmBut everything changed at a frantic pace from one day to the next.

In this way, on March 12 all competitions were paralyzed and on March 15, the electoral process. On the 26th of that month, the federation itself presented an ERTE. Confinement became the daily menu for the Navarrese basketball world, which survived based on courses, videos and telematic meetings.

On May 5, the Competitions of First Female, First Male and Second Female, and on the 25th the dispute over the promotion phases was made impossible, a decision that directly affected Osés Construcción.

He July 21 the new calendar was defined with the restructuring of groups in Women’s League 2, LEB Silver and EBA. The competitions for Osés and Basket Navarra returned on October 11 with the mandatory health protocols. The desired baskets returned.

Wrestling, judo and contact sports, the most affected

Contact sports, one of the terms that had to be familiarized this year, were the major victims of health regulations to curb the pandemic. In this way, wrestling, judo, martial arts and associated sports saw competitions and training halted and their return allowed later than the rest. Even so, the highest representative of the Navarrese wrestling, the Lucha Burlada Club, took full advantage of the permission to return to the tatami: it achieved 24 national medals and the women’s team was champion of Spain.

Skating: training to not be able to compete

Another of the sports with the highest level in Navarra, skating, saw all the appointments on the calendar be canceled this year. In this way, without Navarre, Spain, European or World championships, the athletes who used to return with medals from all these events had to get used to training without any objective. Champions like Ioseba Fernández turned to athletics to keep the competitive gene alive during the summer, but most spent the year keeping fit and waiting for 2021 to get back to normal.

Baseball: Division of Honor is reduced and Los Toros rise

Navarre baseball ended 2020 in the best way, with two representatives in the highest category, the Division of Honor. But this sport was also affected by the vicissitudes of the pandemic, with the paralysis of the competition until September 20, when a competition shortened in just two months began, with the dispute of a single round and without declines. Navarra Baseball finished the season in seventh place. On the other hand, after the promotion phase dispute in Seville, Los Toros, Navarrese senior champion, became the second Navarrese team among the best on 15 November.
