Washington may keep ‘Football Team’ as a permanent name

If Washington fans want and expect a new nickname for the franchise, they may have to get the horse out of the rain. According to the franchise’s president, Jason Wright, the ‘Football Team’ may remain permanently as the team’s name until further notice.

“[Football Team] It’s definitely in the running, ”Wright told John Keim of ESPN. “I think that nothing is out of the question… With that here, people are excited about the idea of a club having an identity rooted only in the area it represents. Maybe it’s Football Team or a Football Club. We need to understand why, so, no matter which direction we go, we can pull the strings from people’s hearts. ”

Washington removed the nickname “Redskins” before the season began amid pressure from many of its sponsors including FedEx, which has the stadium’s name rights, because the name is a racist offense to Native Americans.

Wright previously said that a brand redesign with a new name may not be viable until 2021 because of logistical challenges involving t-shirts, clothing and merchandise. Whatever the nomenclature is in the future, Washington plans to keep its color scheme intact.

“It would be very difficult to change the wine and the gold. You can put this in the pen. I don’t see us changing that at any time. This is not being actively considered … I’ll review it if it happens, but I don’t see it happening, “said Wright.

The president also stated that he received more than 9,000 emails about a new name, and during the offseason period, ‘Red Wolves’ gained momentum among fans.

“We could do something about conservation and animal rights,” he said. “It is a convincing idea; an idea around the experience of the fans of a howl that would fill the stadium. Underneath, for us, it is to understand why. Are we a base of environmentally experienced fans in all fan groups? ”

Washington is the only franchise in the NFL that doesn’t have a nickname at the moment, and it looks like it will continue without a name to call its own.
