World number four Kyren Wilson took a maximum of 147 breaks en route to a 6-4 win over Ashley Hugill in the first round of the British Championship.

World Cup finalist Wilson put together the perfect break in the sixth frame, the third maximum of his career.

It was the second tournament in a row where a maximum was reached after that Judd Trump’s appearance at the Northern Ireland Open last week.

Wilson’s break was the 17th maximum in the UK championship.

If no other player achieves the feat by the end of the tournament, they will receive a £ 15,000 bonus on the maximum break.

Aside from the maximum, Wilson made more runs of 107, 92, and 90 to move forward.

Wilson said, “It’s amazing to have someone else, especially at a Triple Crown event. You know everyone is watching these events specially. I got nervous.”

The 147 was made with no fans in attendance as the event will be held behind closed doors at the Marshall Arena in Milton Keynes.

Wilson added, “Sometimes you can live off the energy of the crowd and sometimes the ‘oohs’ and ‘aahs’ come to you. The silence is deafening and it can sometimes be difficult to keep your focus out there.”

A total of 162 highs in snooker history have now been compiled.

2004 British champions and finalist Stephen Maguire, beaten last year, made it to the second round with a comfortable 6-1 win over 15-year-old Ukrainian teenager Iulian Boiko.

The 2008 champion Shaun Murphy prevailed with a 6-5 win over Lee Walker, while there were also wins for Luca Brecel, David Gilbert and Ricky Walden.

The 2003 winner, Matthew Stevens withdrew from the event on Tuesday after a positive test for Covid-19, which enables Welsh compatriot Jamie Jones to see him again in the next round.

World Champion Ronnie O’Sullivan, who is aiming for an eighth title in the UK, will face amateur Leo Fernandez in his opening game on Wednesday, while Trump number one takes on Paul Davison on Thursday night.

Defending champion Ding Junhui will play Jamie Curtis-Barrett on Thursday afternoon.
