Tim Cahill is defending Jordan Pickford after the Everton goalkeeper was canceled for the game in Newcastle

Everton’s favorite Tim Cahill has criticized the abuse Jordan Pickford received after his challenge against Virgil van Dijk in the Merseyside derby.

The Blues keeper was able to evade a red card after his challenge against Liverpool defender was not punished by VAR. This decision sparked much debate.

Following that incident, Pickford was exposed to a stream of abuse on social media, along with criticism of his poor form this calendar year.

Carlo Ancelotti made a big decision to face Newcastle United in the Premier League. Pickford fell on the bench and Robin Olsen made his debut.

Ancelotti have stated that Pickford will be back against Manchester United next week, which Cahill is delighted with as he gives his verdict on the situation.

“The way Ancelotti is, his man management, you have to think about what Pickford went through mentally.

“”The things I don’t like as a player are some of the things that happen off the field. It’s the abuse he gets, “he told Sky Sports.

“One thing makes this bad challenge, but the second thing is that the responsibility has to come from VAR. It’s a subjective decision, Pickford stayed on, he wasn’t given a red card, then the consequences.

“You can examine anything you want, it might be right for him, but this is football and as a goalkeeper it will be good to see his reaction.

“Goalkeeper Olsen has a chance and that’s exactly what you want as a player. He got his chance, he just said Pickford would be back – I like that – he’s a confident manager.”
