There are no new cases of Covid-19 among Latvian biathletes, however, the composition of the national team has changed in the first stage of the World Cup, Gundars Upenieks, Vice President of the Latvian Biathlon Federation (LBF), opened to LETA.

It has already been reported that biathlete Baiba Bendika and the head coach of the national team Ilmārs Bricis had positive tests in the training camp Covid-19 in Sweden.

On Wednesday, the International Biathlon Union (IBU) reported that Covid-19 had been detected in the Latvian, Russian and Moldovan delegations, but on Thursday it announced that the Romanian and French teams were also infected. As Upenieks explained, one of the technical staff of the team had a positive test, but the athletes who are already in Finland were negative for Covid-19.

“Roberts Slotiņš, Annija Sabule and Andrejs Rastorgujevs have arrived in Finland. For those who were in Sweden, we decided to send them home, considering the risk that there may be a new positive case of Covid-19. Instead, juniors should join the national team in Finland today,” told Upenieks.

Aleksandrs Patrijuks, Sanita Buliņa and Edgars Mise have returned to Latvia, while Rūdis Balodis, Renārs Birkentāls, Kirils Matjuhins and Ieva Pūce have returned to Finland. Intars Berkulis, who has been in Finland since Monday, will perform the duties of the head coach in the first stage.

If Bendika and Bricim’s Covid-19 tests on Friday are negative, they could join the second stage in Finland.

The start of the World Cup season is scheduled for this weekend in the Finnish city of Kontiolahti. Competitions in individual distances are planned for Saturday, but a day later there will be a sprint.

The second stage of the World Cup is planned right in Kontiolahti.
