The Queensland Maroons defeated New South Wales Blues 24-18, winning the women’s state of origin

Queensland recorded an historic victory in the women’s state of origin by beating New South Wales 24-18 at the Sunshine Coast Stadium.

After the score got stuck at 6: 6 at halftime, the Maroons came out on top in the second season with a passage of three attempts to prepare for triumph.

The Blues started a late fight, but the Maroons had enough buffers put up on the scoreboard to lose the deserved winners.

It’s the first time the Maroons have hit the blues since the interstate game was named the women’s state of origin in 2018.

They last defeated their arch rivals in an interstate clash in 2014.

Maroon’s full-back Tamika Upton played for the home team with two tries, while debut colleague Origin and fifth eighth Tarryn Aiken took the Nellie Doherty medal as Player of the Game.

The two teams scored four tries each, but kicking the goal proved crucial as Lauren Brown of the Maroons had a perfect night with the shoe while the Blues could only land one conversion.

Queensland, which hosted the women’s state of origin for the first time, had come into the game as favorites despite New South Wales having won for the past two years.

The Blues had a favorable field position early on and may have had the misfortune not to strike far when star center Isabelle Kelly tossed their winger Shanice Parker a forward pass near the Maroons’ try line.

Visitors had to pay for the missed opportunity as Upton used their breakneck pace minutes later to set up for the game’s opening attempt.

Upton stepped full on their 20-yd-line and cut through the blues disorganized defense to find space on the left edge.

Blues full-back Botille Vette-Welsh chased bravely to defend the title, but Upton stepped into her opponent for a brilliant four-pointer.

Brown converted Upton’s attempt and the Maroons were leading 6-0 after 15 minutes.

The Maroons then had some chances to extend their lead, while the Blues benefited from a deep dive into opposition territory when Blues captain Kezie Apps scored a try in the 24th minute.

Blues halfback Melanie Howard did a neat cultivator kick 20 meters from the Maroons’ trial line and put Upton under considerable pressure as apps roamed around.

Apps tuned their run perfectly, collecting the ball on the go before crashing Upton’s attempted attack.

Howard then added the extras to get the score at 6-6, with neither side being able to increase their total before the break.

Upton added to her high point eight minutes into the second season when she scored her second try.

The Maroons had the ball in their own half when they attacked on the left edge. Aiken broke the Blues defensive line with a clever dummy pass.

Aiken crossed the center line with only Vette-Welsh hitting, but instead of moving her arm, she wisely found Upton to be on her right for support, with the number one Maroons wandering unhindered to freeze their doubles.

Brown kicked the conversion before the Maroons opened up a sovereign 24: 6 lead with converted attempts to Aiken and Stephanie Hancock.

Unsurprisingly, the Blues refused to give up and gave each other a chance to win on death with attempts against Tiana Penitani, Filomina Hanisi and Vette-Welsh.

Vette-Welsh’s attempt came in the last minute of the game, closing the scoreboard gap to six points, but it was too late for the Blues to record their first Origin loss.

The Blues had won the first women’s country of origin in 2018 with 16:10 and underpinned their victory last year with 14: 4.
