On Saturday, the Latvian national hockey team played the second game in the German Cup, giving up 0: 2 to the hostess Germany. The game started quite dynamically and the puck was more controlled by the German national team, creating dangerous moments, but the Latvian national team even managed to withstand the game in the minority. At the end of the first third, Latvia had the opportunity to play in the majority, which the hockey players tried to use, but even in a well-established attack, the type did not reach the goal. Thus, the first period ended without goal gains.

In the second third, the game continued quickly and sharply, and already in the fourth minute, the Latvian national team had the opportunity to take the lead, but this time it did not materialize.

In one of the episodes, the debutant – goalkeeper Rūdolfs-Gusts Lazdiņš pushed the goal, and in the continuation it became sharp at the goalkeeper’s field. However, the second third also ended in a draw.

In the third third, the initiative already belonged to the Latvian national team. However, the Germans discovered the result of the game – Marsels Nēbels beat Lazdinu in the 55th minute.

There was a little more than five minutes left for the Latvian state unit to equalize the result. Two minutes into the match, the referee signaled for a Artis Ābols substitution. And it cost another lost goal – Matthias Plačita scored points in hopes of victory.

It has already been reported that on Friday the Latvian national hockey team started the tournament with a 4: 2 victory over the German U-23 national team, in which the senior players involved were born in 1996. The whole team is made up of German club hockey players.

The Latvian national team, led by head coach Artis Abols, includes many experienced hockey players who have been left without a club in the season affected by the pandemic, but also have new players. Hockey players playing abroad were not invited to reduce the risk of infection. The management of the Latvian Hockey Federation (LHF) and the national team consider the tournament in Germany to be necessary for gaining practice.

In the first game of the tournament, the German national team on Thursday was 7: 2 superior to the team of compatriots included in the U-23 Olympic team, who play under the leadership of the coach of the German U-20 national team Tobias Abstreiter. The German national team is headed by Stephen Cīše and Thomas Popis after the head coach Toni Sederholm became infected with the coronavirus.

After several teams refused to participate, the Latvian national team is the only one who came to the venue from abroad.

Due to the rules introduced to limit the pandemic, the tournament will take place without spectators in the stands, but the team will be in a “bubble” in isolation from the outside world.
