Step back, L’Équipe’s basketball podcast: “Black NBA” episode 2, legend Bill Russell

Support for Mohammed Ali, a loyal Martin Luther King and then his own voice, of course. Bill Russell is one of the basketball greats, a status he owes as much to his extraordinary career as to his work off the court. The first African-American superstar in the NBA, in addition to later becoming the pioneer of black coaches, the pivot of the Boston Celtics first revolutionized the game and then led future generations to more commitment. How did he manage to change mentalities?

At the Celtics, a franchise considered to be the most racist of the time (the 50s and 60s), Bill Russell fought ardently, passionately. We remember his clashes with the fans, his cons, his provocation, his rebounds … And then his acts, obviously, he who never hesitated to take a stand in defense of civil rights. How has the best defender in history become an icon in the fight against inequality?

Animated by Xavier Colombani, with Liliane Trevisan. Realized by Antoine Bourlon.
