Van Anrooij underwent surgery last night. The operation went well, says her sister Lindy van Anrooij Zeeland wakes up. Yet it is still unclear what her chances of recovery are. According to Lindy, who is also an avid cyclist herself, the treating doctors have no idea of whether she can eventually recover completely or not.
‘It could be better’
“When I ask her how she is doing, she says: ‘It could be better,'” says Lindy, who spoke to Shirin this morning. “She had a bad night. Because of the pain she was only able to sleep a few hours.”

According to Lindy, Shirin would rather be treated in a hospital closer to home. “Her team would rather transport her to a hospital in Belgium. That would be very nice for us, because then she is a lot closer.” And for Shirin herself that is also better, because then she can be addressed by the nursing staff in her own language. Because the language barrier is now a major problem in the Czech Republic, according to Lindy.
The accident happened right after the start. Several cyclists fell in the middle of the peloton, which Van Anrooij came into contact with. As a result, she fell off her bicycle and was injured. “She is conscious, but I have never seen such a wound”, said team manager Sven Nys soon after the fall on the Belgian Telenet.
‘She saw the meat hanging’
At first Nys assumed that there was also a fracture, but after an examination in the hospital it turned out that this was not the case. “The wound is very deep,” said her sister Lindy van Anrooij shortly after the accident. “During the fall, a brake disc from a bicycle ended up in her arm, which was still turning. This made the wound very deep.” According to Lindy, her arm is open from her elbow to her wrist. “She’s been very scared, because she saw that wound herself. She just saw the flesh hanging.”

The match in Tábor was won by Van Anrooij’s teammate Lucinda Brand. The World Cup this year consists of five matches, including one in Zeeland. On January 3, Perkpolder will be the stage for the fourth World Cup competition.
