Sebastian Steudtner: “I never had this need for security. Not earlier “

Dhe spectacle has started again. In front of Nazaré, the small Portuguese town 120 kilometers north of Lisbon, gigantic peaks of waves have recently been piling up again. Nowhere else in the world do such giant waves constantly occur. There, in the Mecca of big wave surfers, one person has stood out for years: Sebastian Steudtner (35), son of a German and an Austrian, and one of the world’s best in his guild. A conversation about the dangers, its preparation and the feeling in the wave. And about what drives him – it began in childhood.

Question: Mr. Steudtner, Her life path has led her here via detours. The trip began when you were 16 when you emigrated to Hawaii by yourself. Parents have to cope with that first. What do they say today?

Steudtner: Today my parents are very proud. But of course it wasn’t easy for her, definitely not. I was 16, dropped out of school, went abroad – certainly not a dream career path for my parents.

Question: Weren’t you afraid?
