Russell apologizes via letter after crash behind safety car

George Russell has apologized for his crash behind the safety car in an internal letter to all Williams employees. Russell seemed on his way to his first ever World Cup point in Imola, but ended up in the wall during the safety car phase. “I especially wish I had kept him (his Williams car, ed.) Out of the wall and could have taken a few points home with me.”

George Russell was in tenth place in the Grand Prix of Emilia-Romagna when he slid off the track behind the safety car and ended up in the wall. The British youth thus saw the chance for his first point in F1 and Williams’ first point of the season go up in smoke. Russell felt guilty and wrote an apology letter to all Williams employees. RaceFans got to see the letter.

“There was only one reason and only one reason why we had a chance to score points this weekend,” Russell writes. “That was because you all give your 100% and push this car to its limits week after week.” The Williams driver realizes that a top 10 finish would have been possible if he had been more careful behind the safety car. “I especially wish I had kept him (his Williams car, ed.) Out of the wall and could have taken a few points home with me.”

Still, despite the incident, Russell won’t act differently in the future. “We are racers, we are not here to play it safe. We race to push boundaries. Which will lead to a huge disappointment here and there, but once we get the foot off the accelerator and start working at just 95% we might as well stay home”He explains.

Russell concludes with encouraging words. “I feel that it will work out slowly but surely. I have no doubt that once it comes, it won’t stop anymore. The future looks bright for the team ”, he concludes.
