Papa Bouba Diop has passed away

The Senegalese, scorer against the France team at the 2002 World Cup, died at the age of 42.

Sad week, decidedly, for the world of football. This time, it is Senegal which is in mourning. Former midfielder Papa Bouba Diop died this Saturday at the age of 42, following an illness, announces the press of his country.

Former player of Lens, Fulham or Portsmouth, Papa Bouba Diop was one of the heroes of the 2002 World Cup, and of the superb adventure of the Lions of Téranga. It was of course he who scored the victorious goal in the opening match, where Senegal had created a resounding feat by beating the France team (1-0), the reigning world champion.

In the process, Papa Bouba Diop scored twice against Uruguay. He thus played a major role in the journey of Bruno Metsu’s team, which reached the quarter-finals. With his three goals, he is the Senegalese top scorer in the World Cup. He has worn the Téranga Lions jersey 65 times.
