NFL Week 9 Grades: Patrick Mahomes and Chiefs get a ‘B +’ for wild win, Buccaneers get an ‘F’ for blowout loss

Patrick Mahomes was banned from MVP talk during the first half of the season, but that’s likely to change this week after the Chief’s quarterback almost single-handedly blocked an angry attempt by the Carolina Panthers during Kansas City’s wild 33 -31 win on the Sunday.

They needed all Mahomes had to offer in a game where the Chiefs shot only 30 yards, and he came through with 372 passes and four touchdowns, including two for Tyreek Hill, who ended up with nine catches for 113 yards.

The Chiefs spotted the Panthers early 14: 3, but then Mahomes took over. The quarterback’s first goal pass in the game came with a one-yard throw, and while a one-yard pass is generally not something worth showing you a climax, this was one. At the play it wasn’t just the chiefs who sent Mahomes inside Movebut he caught the shotgun bang while it was still moving, and then he did this …

It’s almost not fair. That one-yard pass for Demarcus Robinson reduced Carolina’s lead to 14-13 just before half-time, and on the score it seemed impossible for Mahomes to let the Chiefs lose.

Though Carolina’s offense with Kansas City went head to toe, Mahomes just made too many big games. With the Chiefs 17-13 behind in the second half, Mahomes led Kansas City to a touchdown on three consecutive holdings and suddenly the four-point deficit had turned into a 33-24 advantage.

The Chiefs quarterback threw three touchdown passes in the second half, one of which was a 28 yard score for Hill, which earned Mahome’s 100 career touchdown passes, which is noteworthy because it got him to do so Fastest player in NFL history to make 100 career touchdown passes.

The pass to Hill gave Mahomes 100 touchdowns in just 40 games, beating Dan Marino’s 34-year record of 44 games.

The quarterback who won the MVP award in 2018 should now be considered the front runner for 2020 win. Russell Wilson rose to the top for the first eight weeks of the season thanks to Seattle’s decision to play Let Russ Cook, but Wilson burned himself in the kitchen for two of the last three weeks.

There were other quarterbacks – like Aaron Rodgers, Tom Brady, and Josh Allen – that were good, but Mahomes was great. He entered the game on Sunday with 20 touchdown passes and one interception in the season, which is noteworthy because no other quarterback in NFL history has ever thrown 20 or more touchdowns with one or less intercept in eight games, and now has he added that. Mahomes was near perfect in nine games, throwing 2,687 yards and 24 touchdown passes along with that one selection.

Mahomes just didn’t make any mistakes, and the Chiefs are almost unbeatable when he doesn’t make mistakes, as the Panthers found out on Sunday.
