Mason Greenwood responds to Rio Ferdinand’s praise after Manchester United win

Mason Greenwood has responded to Rio Ferdinand’s praise following his performance against Istanbul Basaksehir.

The striker came off the bench to score a late goal for Daniel James in United’s 4-1 win. He prevailed against the edge of the box and scored an easy finish for his teammate.

It’s been a frustrating start to the season for Greenwood. Bad form and illness limited him to just two goals in nine games for United, but his promising performance caught Ferdinand’s attention.

Ferdinand tweeted a video from his BT Sports Expert and said, “This guy makes me watch the workout. More from Mason Greenwood!”

It triggered a response from the young striker, who responded with a love heart emoji.

Talking about BT Sport after the game, Ferdinand said the 19-year-old’s growing physicality would match his ability to develop, comparing him to great United player Ruud van Nistelrooy.

He said, “Look at him, he is growing too. He will be a beast when it comes to the technology he has, his understanding and his spatial awareness.

“He plays with both legs and is a devastating finisher. I want to watch the training, that’s what he gets out of me. I want to see his technique, he hits balls into the back of the net.

“We’re talking about people like Ruud van Nistelrooy – you get excited when you see people who close aggressively and precisely – he has that in abundance.”

Manchester United returned to the Champions League with a 4-1 win over Istanbul Basaksehir at Old Trafford.

Bruno Fernandes’ brace put Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side on their third straight win, with Marcus Rashford and Daniel James also on the report.

Ferdinand’s praise was confirmed by his expert Paul Scholes, who supported Greenwood to become United’s top finisher.

Scholes said: “He looks physically stronger now than the last time we saw him. He’s a big, strong, powerful boy, and he’s only getting bigger and stronger. I think of the three or four strikers, who they have, it is him. ” will be the best finisher. “
