Ligue 1: before Chelsea, Rennes overthrows Brest

What you must remember :

At the end of the fifth day, everything was going in the best of all possible worlds for Stade Rennes, then undefeated in a Ligue 1 in which he was in charge. But since then, everything seemed to have fallen apart. Deprived of his prodigy Eduardo Camavinga – probably forfeit until the truce and unavailable for the Blues – the Breton club was going through a difficult period as much in Ligue 1 (two draws and one defeat) as in the Champions League (one draw and one defeat).

Before two perilous trips to Chelsea in C1 and Paris in L1, the Rennais hoped to make the Brestois the suitable opponent to bounce back. But without a victory for more than a month, the Bretons almost broke their teeth on the Finistère block, near the hold-up at Roazhon Park after Franck Honorat’s goal (0-1, 57th).

Thanks to two goals from their central defense – Damien Da Silva (1-1, 66th) and Nayef Aguerd (2-1, 70th) -, however, Rennes were able to reverse the situation, to breathe a little and train with PSG and Lille a leading trio at 18 points. If they have probably not seen the resounding victory of Chelsea who were playing at the same time in the Premier League (0-3 victory at Burnley), Julien Stéphan’s men will have to capitalize on this success to now exist on the European scene against a much tougher opponent.

The duo: Da Silva-Aguerd strong heads

Martin Terrier, Jérémy Doku, Serhou Guirassy… Rennes has talent ahead. And yet, it is from his duo of central defenders Da Silva-Aguerd that the light finally came. With two headshots on set pieces, the Rennes defensive base relieved Bretons hitherto imprecise, while Terrier (25th) and Guirassy (88th) found the bar. The improbable duo joined the last city in the Rennes goalscoring rankings (3).

The number: 0

There were zero shots on target in the first period (10 shots for Rennes, 1 for Brest). This had not happened in Ligue 1 since February 16, 2020 and the opposition between Reims and Rennes.
