National player Joshua Kimmich will be absent from Bayern Munich at least until the end of the year following his knee injury in the top Bundesliga match at Borussia Dortmund. The 25-year-old midfielder was operated on on the lateral meniscus of his right knee on Sunday evening.

The medical department of the German record champion assumes that the flexible Kimmich will be available again in January, as the club announced.

Bayern reacted with relief that Kimmich’s injury is not as severe as feared. “We are happy that Joshua will probably be available to us again in a few weeks,” said sports director Hasan Salihamidzic in the statement.

“We will give him the best possible support during his rehab.” Kimmich injured himself in a duel with BVB professional Erling Haaland in Dortmund in the 36th minute in the 3-2 draw of Munich on Saturday evening.
