Is the Joachim Loew Era in Germany Over?

Jakarta

Joachim Loew’s chair in Germany is rocking. Could this be a sign of the end of the 60-year coaching era?

Germany had just suffered a major defeat. Meeting Spain in the UEFA Nations League on Wednesday (11/18/2020) in the morning WIB, Die Mannschaft was crushed by six goals without reply.

The result equaled a poor streak 89 years ago, when West Germany was beaten by Austria by the same score. But what’s worse, the young German squad is also having trouble developing the game. Throughout the match, not a single shot on goal was able to be made by Toni Kroos et al.

Loew gets a lot of insults as a result. The decision to move on from senior players like Mats Hummels, Jerome Boateng, and Thomas Mueller were brought up again.

Under the pretext of regenerating after being eliminated in a shameful manner at the 2018 World Cup, Loew tried new energies. However, the results have not satisfied the supporters.

In the 2018/19 UEFA Nations League, Germany has never won in four group stage matches and is the caretaker. Conditions began to improve after Germany managed to qualify for the 2020 European Cup, but inconsistencies were again seen in the 2020/21 UEFA Nations League.

Germany only won two of the six matches, and failed to qualify for the semifinals. Naturally, Loew’s reluctance to use a number of senior players was questioned again. After all, those who were eliminated weren’t players whose golden age had run out.

Hummels is still the doorstop of Borussia Dortmund’s defense, while Boateng and Mueller have been key actors in Bayern Munich’s success in winning the treble last season.

Maybe Loew’s decision reflects on Vicente Del Bosque’s Spain. Having won the 2008 European Cup winning squad, Del Bosque continued this success by winning the 2010 World Cup and 2012 European Cup.

Filled with names such as Xabi Alonso, David Villa, Iker Casillas, Sergio Busquets, Gerard Pique, Xavi, Andres Iniesta, Cesc Fabregas, David Silva, to Sergio Ramos, at a glance Spain will return to the top when fighting in the 2014 World Cup.

However, Del Bosque realized too late that his team was running low on gasoline. Sure enough, in Brazil, La Furia Roja was eliminated in the group phase after being defeated by the Netherlands and Chile.

Two years later, Spain began to give places to young names such as Alvaro Morata, David De Gea, to Thiago Alcantara. However, the changes were not significant. In the 2016 European Cup, Spain’s move was stopped in the last 16 by Italy. Del Bosque finally resigned.

It could be that what happened to Del Bosque made Loew not want to linger on maintaining senior players who were felt to be no longer contributing greatly. He doesn’t want to fall in the same hole.

The problem is, Germany has never appeared consistent with their young squad. Director of the German national team, Oliver Bierhoff, has confirmed that Loew’s fate will remain safe, but if Germany fails again at the Euro next year, it is not impossible that the Loew era will end.

After 14 years, Germany may need a new captain who can provide fresh ideas that have not been reached by Loew. The results for next summer are likely to determine whether the Joachim Loew era in Germany will continue or should it end.
