Horner relieved: ‘Red Bull would have left the sport otherwise’

Christian Horner is pleased with the support of Ferrari and Renault in the plans to freeze engine development from 2022. All engine manufacturers have now agreed to a freeze, which gives Red Bull Racing certainty for the future.

Because Red Bull has to take over the Honda engine after 2021, Max Verstappen’s team wants to ensure that the Formula 1 teams are no longer allowed to develop further from 2022. This keeps Red Bull’s emergency project affordable and allows the team to stay in the sport. In conversation with Motorsport-total.com Horner emphasizes the need for an agreement.

“It is good news for Formula 1 that they have now agreed,” said the team boss. ‘It would have been impossible for us otherwise. Certainly because new engine regulations will be introduced in 2025 or 2026 and we therefore have to start over again, investing in a development is currently a waste of money. It saves us hundreds of millions of dollars. ‘

No other candidate for Red Bull engine

Red Bull could potentially leave the sport without a freeze, Horner says. ‘It would be impossible for us to continue then. A freeze is therefore essential. We would have to choose someone other than Honda as the engine supplier, but there is no other candidate. ‘
