Covid-19 in football: LFF explains situation of sick, contacts and U-21 national team

With the resumption of the Optibet Latvian Football Super League championship on Friday, November 20, there was a growing disagreement over the national restrictions on Covid-19 and compliance. LFF explains that everything goes according to the standards set by the country and on Friday everyone who can do it participates in the matches.

In recent days, the uncertainty about the players of the Latvian U-21 football team, who had to observe the country’s self-isolation after returning from the European Championship game in Poland, became louder. As explained by the Ministry of Education and Science (MES), the U-21 team is not an adult national unit, so these players are not covered by the derogations contained in the current restrictions. Five U-21 footballers come from “Valmiera FC”, two footballers from the U-21 national team are in the ranks of “Jelgava”, but one more is in the RFS and “Liepāja” applications.

There was still active communication in the first half of the day, but the solution was found only shortly before the start of the match, which was at 1 pm. Therefore, in today’s matches these teams could not use U-21 national footballers.

The second case involves Covid-19 and possible contacts. Vladislavs Sorokins fell ill with Covid-19 in the Latvian national team, and on Friday in Liepāja he went to the field playing for RFS. This week, football players of the Latvian champion “Riga FC” became ill with Covid-19 en masse, several of whom legionnaires often meet with legionnaires of other teams on a daily basis.
