Swimming: American Dressel swims world record on individual medley

8:08 PM American swimmer Caeleb Dressel has smashed the world record in the 100 meter individual medley. The two-time Olympic champion tapped during short track races in Budapest after 49.88 seconds.

The 24-year-old Dressel was the first swimmer ever to dive under 50 seconds during the International Swimming League. He beat Vladimir Morozov’s old world record by 0.38 seconds. The Russian swam that best time more than two years ago in Eindhoven.

The Dutch Kira Toussaint also set a world record on Saturday in the 25-meter pool of the Duna Aréna in the Hungarian capital. She swam the 50 meter backstroke in 25.60 seconds.

Cycling: Mitchelton-Scott binds seven riders longer

6.53 pm: Mitchelton-Scott has committed seven Australian riders longer. These include Luke Durbridge, who has been with the team since 2012.

The 29-year-old Durbridge is a four-time time trial champion of Australia. Cameron Meyer, reigning Australian road champion, also extended his contract for two years.

Robert Stannard (22), Callum Scotson (24), Alex Edmondson (26), Damien Howson (28) and Nick Schultz (26) have also signed a new alliance.

Football: Spain without Busquets in decisive game

5.56 pm: The Spanish team has to do without Sergio Busquets in the deciding group match in the Nations League on Tuesday. An MRI scan showed that the 32-year-old FC Barcelona midfielder may not have sustained any major damage to his left knee, but he has to stay out of the way. Spain and Germany compete in Seville for the group win and thus qualification for the final round of the national tournament.

Busquets was injured against Switzerland on Saturday in Basel. According to Spanish media, Busquets is on the side for about two weeks with a slight strain of a knee ligament. Coach Ronald Koeman of FC Barcelona will therefore miss the Catalan midfielder on Saturday against Atletico Madrid and next week in the Champions League against Dinamo Kiev.

Swimming: Australian Jack’s suspension reduced to two years

2.33 pm: The international sports tribunal CAS has reduced the suspension of Australian Shayna Jack from four to two years. The 22-year-old swimmer tested positive for the banned ligand role in an out-of-competition check in the summer of last year. Although Jack denied knowingly taking the drug, the Australian Anti-Doping Authority imposed a four-year suspension.

The swimmer took two silver and two bronze medals on the relay numbers at the 2017 World Cup. Jack withdrew from the World Cup in South Korea last year, officially for personal reasons. It was later revealed that she had tested positive.

Jack went to CAS to contest her suspension. The case was heard in September. The sports tribunal finds it plausible that Jack did not take the prohibited substance intentionally. The swimmer can come back into action from July 12, 2021, but must skip the Tokyo Olympics.

Football: Kadioglu drops out of the Dutch Juniors

12.33 pm: The Juniors complete the European Championship qualification without Ferdi Kadioglu. The attacking midfielder of Fenerbahçe is too injured to go to Portugal for the last group match in the European Championship qualification. National coach Erwin van de Looi is not calling for a replacement for the 21-year-old Kadioglu and therefore travels with 21 players to Portugal. Kadioglu stayed on the bench in Almere against Young Belarus (5-0) on Sunday.

The Juniors already secured their participation in next year’s European Championship in Hungary and Slovenia last month. Van de Looi’s team managed to win all nine group matches and has a goal difference of 45-3. On Wednesday evening, only the group win is at stake in Portimão. Young Portugal has 3 points less than the Dutch reserves.

Earlier, Dani de Wit, Tyrell Malacia (injuries) and Abdou Harroui (positive corona test) dropped out of the Dutch Juniors. Ryan Gravenberch and Sven Botman moved from Van de Looi’s selection to the ‘big’ Orange last week.

Tennis: ‘Tennis bubble’ for Australian Open in Victoria still uncertain

10.24 am: The Australian Tennis Association’s plan to move the Australian Open preparation tournaments to the state of Victoria has not yet received approval from the authorities. Prime Minister Daniel Andrews warned that fighting the coronavirus is a higher priority than creating a tennis bubble in the state of Melbourne city.

“The Australian Open is definitely an important event, but avoiding a third wave of contagion is perhaps even more important,” said the Prime Minister of Victoria.

The Australian tennis association on Monday unfolded the plan to move the tennis tournaments from Sydney, Brisbane, Perth, Hobart, Adelaide and Canberra all to Victoria. That way, the tennis players can avoid the tightened travel restrictions and play the warm-up tournaments in the same state. The players who travel to Australia first go into quarantine for a period and then can move freely in Victoria. “With that we have the guarantee that the Australian Open can continue,” said director Craig Tiley.

But state prime minister Andrews dampened enthusiasm for the tennis bubble. “It’s not a done deal yet. It is a huge logistics company with complicated quarantine arrangements. I think we can let the Australian Open go ahead, but it will look very different, ”said the prime minister, whose state has only recently come out of a lockdown.

The Australian Open is scheduled for January 18 to 31. The preparation tournaments are in the weeks before. Tennis Australia’s plan for the bubble assumes that about 500 foreign tennis players will be quarantined for two weeks upon arrival in Victoria. They have to stay in their hotel but have access to a tennis court. Corona tests are part of the protocol.

Football: Coronavirus hits South Korea national football team in Vienna

09.13 am: The national football team of South Korea was hit by the corona virus during the practice trip in Austria. Six players have tested positive. The entire squad has been quarantined in their hotel rooms in Vienna, squad officials reported.

South Korea played against Mexico last Saturday without the six infected players and lost 3-2. Star player Son Heung-min from Tottenham Hotspur was one of the negatively tested players and participated.

An exhibition game with Qatar is scheduled for Tuesday. That match can continue if, according to FIFA rules, thirteen uninfected players are available. The selection will undergo a new test round on Monday.

The six players infected with the virus are Kwon Chang-hoon, Lee Dong-jun, Hwang In-beom, Na Sang-ho, Kim Moon-hwan and goalkeeper Jo Hyeon-woo.

Football: Norway does send a football team to Austria

08.40 am: Norway will play the game in the Nations League in Vienna against Austria on Wednesday. The Norwegian Football Association sends a new selection that will be led by the national coach of Young Norway, Leif Gunnar Smerud. That team will be presented on Monday.

The Norwegians did not play their scheduled game against Romania on Sunday. The Norwegian government forbade football players to fly to Bucharest. The selection of national coach Lars Lagerbäck had to be quarantined by the Ministry of Health after a positive corona test by international Omar Elabdellaoui.

The footballers were already ready for departure at Oslo airport when that announcement came in. The game is likely to be turned into a regulatory 3-0 defeat for the Norwegians, who are in the race for promotion to the A division of the Nations League. With a win against Austria, Norway can even win the group with that defeat.

“It was a tough job, but we are happy that the game can continue. Not only for sporting reasons, but also to fulfill our obligations towards UEFA ”, was a statement from the union.

The temporary national coach Smerud sounded militant. “I look forward to meeting the players who are willing to help the national team in this chaotic situation. It is now about preparing and performing well against Austria. ”

Football: De Bruyne is already talking about a longer stay at Manchester City

07.35 am: Kevin De Bruyne is in talks with Manchester City for a longer stay at the club. That said the Belgian international at the Flemish TV channel VTM. He has played for the Premier League club since 2015 and has already won two league titles with City.

The 29-year-old midfielder does the negotiations himself. “That is possible in this situation, because I would like to stay with City. If I wanted to leave City and the club wouldn’t want that, then that is a situation in which you do need someone to mediate ”, said De Bruyne, who still has a contract until mid-2023.

“I still have a contract for 2.5 years. We’re chatting a bit right now, but we’re not very far in the talks. There will be no difficult in the negotiations, and that goes for both sides. Because that’s not how we work. ”
