Wiebes wins spectacular Three Days Bruges-De Panne after D’Hoore declassification

Lorena Wiebes has won a spectacular edition of the Three Days of Bruges-De Panne. On the line she was beaten by Jolien D’Hoore, but the Belgian was declassified due to dangerous sprint behavior.

Giro, Vuelta and the Driedaagse Brugge-De Panne for women: cyclists did not have to leave their home on a packed cycling afternoon. The ladies were presented with a turbulent ride, because the wind was blowing quite hard in West Flanders all day long. It took a long time before a real group could drive away.

Exciting finale full of fan spectacle

In the final of the race, the teams present came head over heels at the front of the peloton. The nervousness was visible and palpable in the pack, where there was a constant fear of possible fractures in the pack. Team Sunweb, Boels-Dolmans and CCC-Liv all contributed to their top women.

At fifteen kilometers from the end, the remaining group broke into several parts. Strong women like Jolien D’Hoore, Ellen van Dijk and Alison Jackson were present here. The group worked well together and thus took a small lead over the chasing group. The gap was no longer than thirty seconds, so we saw an exciting battle between the front groups in the run-up to the finish.

Regrouping, exciting sprint between Wiebes and D’Hoore

Despite the hard work of the riders in the front, a regrouping took place seven kilometers from the end. Attempts to escape from this group were still made, but in this part of the race the wind was right in front. For that reason, every escape attempt was apparently simply neutralized. The kilometers were ticking and we were heading for a sprint.

The sprint was disrupted by a strong attempt by Amy Pieters. The Sunweb women brought the group back, after which Alison Jackson had a small hole. She could maintain the pace quickly, after which the sprint started behind her. D’Hoore was the first, with Wiebes in her wheel. The Belgian deviated a bit from her line, so Wiebes could no longer get over it. D’Hoore was faster on the line, but she was declassified after intervention by the jury.
