Time for the turnaround, Malinwa: these figures prove that Vrancken is rightly complaining about inefficiency | KV Mechelen

KV MechelenIt is not the season of KV Mechelen for the time being. Last season sixth as a PhD candidate, now in a desolate fourteenth place. Barely seven points after nine games. The pain point? “Inefficiency. We are missing too many opportunities ”, coach Wouter Vrancken is always disappointed. The figures, kept by data company Gracenote, confirm his explanation.

High number of opportunities

In recent weeks, Wouter Vrancken has regularly mentioned at his press chats that his team forces the most number of chances in 1A. We must correct that – albeit slightly. Malinwa decked out a total of 122 opportunities this season. For the sake of clarity: also blocked shots, attempts that went wide, etc. are included in this. It’s the big picture. This makes KV Mechelen the second most attacking team in the first division after four teams. Only Club Brugge (148), AA Gent (139), Standard (127) and Beerschot (127) do better.

In comparison, Malinwa was only eleventh in the ranking of most created opportunities at the end of last season. The supply is therefore not the problem by far this year. “As long as we create opportunities, we don’t worry”, it sounds to the trainer and players. The team is doing quite well from an offensive point of view. Proof of this are the sometimes clever combinations that KV regularly puts on the mat. Only the shoe pinches in the finish.

Second least efficient

Is there a surefire attacker / midfielder in the room? Not yet. Where KV Mechelen was the most efficient team for a long time last season with guys like Togui and De Camargo in the lead, it now dangles almost at the bottom of that ranking. With 122 goal attempts, Malinwa scored barely ten goals – that’s crying with the cap on. KV has converted 8 percent of its chances so far. Only Mouscron (5 percent) is doing worse.

Tomorrow, KV Mechelen, which does not panic after a disappointing start to the season, will take on Eupen (at 4.15 pm). This is followed by duels against Club Brugge and Charleroi. You read it: it is better to gain Am Kehrweg. But then there will have to be a turnaround in efficiency.
