The French Tennis Federation censors an account for Roland Garros content

The FFT (French Tennis Federation), like almost all entities, corporations or companies, is very jealous of its contents and does not like that anyone makes use of them, despite the fact that it does not receive an economic return from them. Based on the DMCA (Digital Millennium Copyright Act), the FFT required the account of Twitter @doublefault28 let go up gifs of plays of Roland Garros.

@ doublefault28 is an account dedicated to creating and sharing gifs, series of animated frames without sound, of the highlights of tennis matches. It has more than 48,700 followers and is one of the places that fans visit who want to relive an outstanding play. But during Roland Garros, the account has been notified to abandon its activity.

The account message

«Dear friends, for 5 years I’ve done gifs of all the tournaments of the year, I have respected copyrights and have never had any problems (except with the FFT). They sent me the DMCA again. They have me tired because they are very… not very intelligent, at least. In these conditions, I cannot and do not want to continue doing and sharing gifs. Friends! I am very grateful for your help and support. Thank you! They are the best!”

The WIPO Copyright Treaty

The World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) Copyright Treaty (WCT) is a particular arrangement that deals with the protection of works and the rights of their authors in the digital environment. In addition to the rights recognized in the Berne Convention, certain economic rights are granted. The latter may be applied to your account if you ignore the warnings.

What does copyright cover?

Copyright protection covers only expressions, but not the ideas, procedures, methods of operation or mathematical concepts themselves. Copyright may or may not cover elements such as titles, slogans or logos, depending on whether the paternity of the work is sufficient. Legally, the analysis would be complex, in common sense not so much. Many journalists and fans have criticized the FFT: “They have several more serious problems to be behind this.”
