The director of the Sports Department of the Ministry of Education and Science explains to whom and where sports are allowed

He explained that, for example, a boxer is allowed to train indoors with one coach, but competitions are prohibited until November 6.

According to him, the main difference between team sports league top league competitions for adults and non-team sports professional competitions for adults is that in the case of teams they are teams based on employment contracts and mainly for sports income, or sports organized in a professional or semi-professional manner. in a sports organization that is a top league team sports competition.

An exception was provided in this case. He emphasized that, nevertheless, the rules adopted by the government did not allow them to operate freely, as they still had to take various additional precautions, both those developed by the sports federation and the rules of the relevant international federation, as well as those developed by the competition organizers.

Commenting on the changes in individual sports, he said that such events in boxing and athletics, for example, are not planned in the near future, and if so, the MES does not consider that sports competitions or events should be allowed in every individual sport.

“Basically, the disease transmission chain needs to be monitored during these three weeks,” Severs said, adding that no sporting events take place during this time, except for team sports, professional and semi-professional competitions, and international sporting events, whether team or non-team sports.

The Deputy State Secretary of the Ministry of Education and Science emphasized that if the international sports calendar includes individual sports competitions, then the regulation adopted by the government on Tuesday does not prohibit it. They may be subject to all requirements and safety precautions.

Severs also stated that, for example, in a football super league, which is dominated by professional athletes, all adults can continue to train and compete, however, if there is a minor on the team, then that person is prohibited from training and participating in competitions.

Severs explained that the amendments adopted by the government on Tuesday stipulate that from October 17 to November 6, sports activities, including in sports schools, are organized outdoors without the use of changing rooms.

He also mentioned that if the room is large enough and it can be ensured that there are several people in the same room, each of whom works with his trainer without crossing, then such individual trainings can take place. At the same time, he emphasized that it is not forbidden to visit sports facilities and clubs individually, subject to all security measures.

Severs stressed that the camps are also allowed to operate, only on Friday the amendments adopted by the government provide for the number of participants to be reduced from 50 to 30, while on Tuesday the norm was clarified, which stipulates that only one camp may take place in one place. Previously, several camps could take place in one place.

At the press conference, Severs thanked the sports organizations that responsibly make decisions about the organization of events, citing as an example the Latvian Basketball Union, which has just announced the suspension of almost all league activities for a certain period of time. The Premier League continues to operate, according to Severa.

As reported, the Cabinet of Ministers on Tuesday supported the proposal of the Ministry of Health (MoE) to ban indoor indoor sports training for the period from October 17 to November 6.

The Ministry of Agriculture pointed out that the spread of Covid-19 is also related to the activities of sports teams, therefore it is planned to ban collective sports classes or indoor training for a month.

The changes in the regulations stipulate that in the future, collective amateur sports events will be able to take place only outdoors, without the use of changing rooms, but only individual sports activities will take place indoors.

The mentioned restriction will not be applied to the Latvian adult team, Latvian Olympic team and Latvian Paralympic team athletes, as well as team sports games of the highest league team sports training for adults.

Also, with the changes in the regulations, it is planned to prohibit the organization of sports events from October 17 to November 6. This prohibition will not apply to international sports events, as well as team sports competitions of the highest league team sports competitions for adults.
