The Cologne local amatador Mies and the Coburg Krawietz lost in the final of the doubles competition with 2: 6, 4: 6 against Raven Klaasen and Ben McLachlan.
“It’s still a lot of fun,” said Mies: “I hope we come back next year and then win.” Krawietz addressed his colleague and said: “I would have liked to get the thing in your hometown. But then we’ll do it next year with spectators.” Only 250 people were allowed in the hall on Sunday, including players, referees, supervisors and the organizational team. After all, the friends of Krawietz and Mies and many relatives of the Cologne native were sitting in a box.
The 38-year-old South African and the ten-year-old Japanese have only recently started playing together, but both are considered absolute double specialists. McLachlan, who grew up in New Zealand, has won two of his five tournament wins on the ATP Tour alongside Germany’s number two Jan-Lennard Struff. “We thought even before the tournament that it would fit well with both of them,” said Krawietz before the match.
After losing the first set relatively smoothly, the German duo also received an early break in the second round. Immediately after the rebreak to 4: 4, Krawietz lost his serve. “Kramies” had two breakballs again, but after 1:14 hours the match was lost.
